devastatingly beautiful, the kind of beautiful that takes jase's breath away and practically knocks him on his ass with a single glance. he seems to exist so effortlessly, practically gliding through his shop as a watchful cat looks on, his actions thoughtless but simultaneously precise as he chases a pour of espresso with a sprinkle of something a little more magical, the passing scratch between his ears on his way to deliver the latte to a customer's table when jase had made conscious efforts to stay out of the way. god, just looking at him makes his chest ache.
... or maybe that's just nerves, now that it's much later, the sun long gone from the sky and replaced with the kind of starless, inky blackness that only a city can provide, the lights dimmed nice and low as they end up talking and kissing in briar's bed. it's easier now between them, jase's intensity tempered by briar but certainly not extinguished — only molded by briar's own hands into something far more palatable for the both of them so neither grows overwhelmed by the other — by their own selves, too. jase falls easily into the way their legs tangle together when they face each other, the press of a palm against his bare chest and up the slope of his shoulder as he melts, pliant as ever, against soft lips.
jase still can't help himself sometimes, though — especially when the weight of the box still resting in his pocket looms ever-present — and he eventually pulls it out and presents it to briar with a sheepish sort of smile, one that doesn't quite reach his eyes perhaps out of fear of rejection of him or his gift. he gets neither — only the soft sound of his name as the fae considers his gift, heart leaping the moment briar looks back up at him. )
I — I know it might be a little much, but. ( but. ) I couldn't stop thinking about what you'd look like wearing it.
[ they're still working on it, finding a balance between their personalities and needs. briar is particular about many things – especially the time he spends with people, how and when and where – and he's learning to be clear about what he wants while making room for more of jase in his life. jase, who has been so eager, so sweet while still treading carefully around the barriers briar still has standing. ever since that night he decided to send that photo, the night that evolved into so much more than he had initially been prepared for, he's begun to see jase in a changed light. he's always been handsome, but briar is memorizing the high rise of his cheekbone, the way his eyes crinkle when he smiles, the noble slope of his nose. when he had shown more affection to the cat, he's begun to show more for the human as well. kissing him fervently, guiding those soft hands over his body.
he's dressed oppositely, his large half-buttoned blouse hanging off his shoulders, covering the underwear that remains on his hips. without a word, he unties the ribbon around his neck, tossing it onto the nightstand before unclasping the necklace. briar's eyes never leave jase's when he holds the choker up to his neck, pulling the chain back so he can clasp it around the pale column of his throat.
it feels expensive, heavy with jewels, and a part of him feels a little like a prized pet even though he knows this isn't jase's intent. the feeling isn't ... unwelcome, which surprises him the most. his big eyes are heavy-lidded when he assesses his cat's reaction, lowering his hands to his lap to be appraised. ]
( teeth idly catch against his lower lip as he watches briar so, so carefully as he sits back against the ornate headboard, eyes perhaps a little wider than he'd like, betraying the wonderment in his gaze. he wouldn't be surprised if the fae thanked him for his gift, set it gently back in its box, and slid it onto the side table due to it's — extravagance. jase would be lying if he said that the jewelry didn't cost a lot, but those numbers don't matter to him, a mere blip on his radar especially when compared to the mental picture he's conjured up in his mind of parted lips, soft features, and a heavy, sparkling choker around his throat.
as it turns out, jase doesn't have to keep imagining it. briar indulges him.
the cat temporarily forgets to breathe as he watches that ribbon go discarded, the slow, delicate way he holds the jeweled choker to his throat as though considering it for a moment before deciding to clasp it at the back of his neck, letting it settle there — jase can see him swallow, can see how the jewels move against the smooth column of his throat — before his hands settle into his lap. between that and the way his top sits slightly askew on his shoulders, the gentle muss of his longer locks, jase is —
completely taken. finally exhaling, he sits up a little straighter, gaze sweeping over briar, before finally murmuring as his legs stretch out invitingly: ) Come here.
[ he feels all too aware of everything – the heat in the room, the weight of the choker around his neck, the weight of jase's gaze on him as he tries his present on for size. it's a perfect fit and he cannot deny that he likes the way it feels, especially in contrast to the ribbons and scarves he often wears depending on the season.
he'll have to turn down any follow-up gifts in the near future for this is just beyond anything briar had been prepared to accept. something in him says not to turn it away because there is something there that they both want to explore.
he presses his palms against the mattress so that he can bring himself closer to jase, right into his lap where he settles with his legs on either side of him, tucked beneath his own weight. arms slide around jase's neck as briar sits a head taller than him, fingers carding through jet black hair until he decides to guide jase to tip his head back ever so slowly.
briar's lips hover over his for a moment before he kisses him, sucking his bottom lip into his mouth before licking into it. it's sensual, different from his usual soft and tender way of showing affection. ]
